Data + Tables x jQuery = datatables.net
0I stumbled across this amazing plugin for jQuery the other day while randomly browsing the interwebz. I’ve not used it myself yet but it looks like the mutts nuts for displaying tabular data!
Check it out for yourself… http://www.datatables.net
Once I get chance to use it myself I will post my experiences.
Here’s what it looks like:
For Sale
0I’ve just listed some things on ebay if anyone is interested…
My Photos
0I’ve started to upload my pics here rather than flickr and facebook. Check out the My Photos link at the top of the page
I started by adding a selection of sample photos taken with my Nikon D80 & Sigma DG 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 Lens. Have a look at the shots here
And I have also added an album of photos from a recent camping trip in Wales.
Enjoy

z4p.me updates
0Over the past month I have updated z4p.me with a new look. Adding a list of the latest z4p’s (shortened url’s) and a basic graph of the last 7 days stats – z4p’s created and z4p’s hit’s/visit’s.
I have also created browser extensions for both Google Chome and Mozilla Firefox…
Chrome Extension (get it here)
Mozilla Firefox Addon (get it here)
Treated myself to a HTC Desire…
0I have treated myself to a HTC Desire after having a Nokia E71 for over a year and am very impressed so far. Why did I go Android and not iPhone I hear you ask… Well I have always been anti apple due to their restriction on comparability with other hardware and software plus I dislike iTunes (but that is another story).
More to follow….

Open-Source groupware/collaboration solutions
0I just thought I would share this with everyone…
While setting up a new project the other day I decided I needed a groupware/collaboration solution to help manage it and the people working with me. So I did some searching and was happy to see a healthy number of open source solutions. After a quick trial of Feng Office (http://z4p.me/zkaP) and Collabitive (http://z4p.me/r6nL) we found Feng Office to be the best solution for us. Collabitive had a very nice looking interface but had bugs in some of it’s basic operations which meant it was a definite no-go!
After using Feng Office for the last few days I have to say I am pretty impressed. All functionality works well out of the box. Navigation is easy as is managing different workspaces and users etc. My one gripe is the basic ugly interface and although the navigation is easy it sometimes doesn’t quite work how we’d expect. That said Feng Office is a great solution for group working/collaboration!
Note: Another solution worth looking at is EGroupware (http://z4p.me/76qI). Unfortunately we couldn’t trail this as it could not be installed on my Linux hosting due to some of the pre-requisites. Hopefully I will get chance to play with EGroupware in the future as it does look like a very comprehensive solution.
VOIP, Sipgate and Trixbox
0The other day I decided I needed a dedicated phone number for one of my projects so I started to look for good value VOIP providers… Eventually I came across sipgate.co.uk who are offering free UK phone numbers (inc 0845 numbers). With this deal all inbound calls are free and outbound calls are charged at their reasonable tariff. Given I will not be making many (if any at all) outbound calls this seems the perfect solution for me. Registration and setup took minutes and I was able to receive calls. Great!
Now I started thinking how cool it would be if I could have some of these call queuing and option based system on the phone number… I had heard of Asterisk before and started doing some research, before long I came across Trixbox.
Trixbox is basically linux (in this case CentOS) and Asterisk bundled together in one easy to install distribution. And comes with a great web ui for managing the Asterisk voice server. Some of you may also notice that there is also AsteriskNow as an alternative to Trixbox and wonder why I didn’t just go with that… No reason really, maybe I will try AsteriskNow some time.
Trixbox took me about 30 mins to get installed and configured. That includes setting up a SIP trunk for my sipgate.co.uk 0845 number. For someone who has zero experience in this technology that ain’t bad!
Over the next few weeks I will compile a dummies guide to setting this all up and post it here for everyone’s enjoyment.
nice looking code editor…

“Intype is a powerful and intuitive code editor for Windows with lightning fast response. It is easily extensible and customizable, thanks in part to its support for scripting and native plug-ins. It makes development in any programming or scripting language quick and easy.”
Still in it’s very early stages but looks sexy! Once I have used it a little I’ll post an update. Check it out here http://intype.info
